The demi-mortal daughter of a goddess seeks to overthrow the deities in favor of a world ruled by science and by mortal will in three interconnected tales.

The ritual of Ashes has played out in Cloud for centuries untold: a young girl is chosen to spend a year in silence, except when she speaks for the dead. She serves as the avatar of a goddess’s daughter, and all proceeds according to the laws of magic. But the goddess, Annis, is a tyrant–and the people of Cloud are no longer sure they want to live under her rule.

Cloud & Ashes brings together three tales of the Ashes lineage and its gambit to overthrow the gods: “Jack Daws’ Pack,” a Nebula Award finalist novelette; World Fantasy Award winning novella A Crowd of Bone, and the novel Unleaving.

"Greer Gilman is a master of myth and language with few equals in this world. Cloud & Ashes is a triumphant, heart-rending triptych, a mosaic of folklore, intellectual pyrotechnics, and marvelous, motley characters that takes the breath and makes the blood beat faster.”—Catherynne M. Valente, author of In the Night Garden

"A work that reads like language stripped bare, myth tracked to its origins. Seasons, weather, lust, pain, sacrifice - the stuff of old ballads becomes intensely real.”—Locus Magazine

"Sublimely lyrical Jacobeanesque dialect... readers who enjoy symbolism and allusion will cherish Gilman's use of diverse folkloric elements to create an unforgettable realm and ideology.”—Publishers Weekly

"No one else writes like Greer Gilman. She is one of our most innovative and important writers, in fantasy or out of it.”—Theodora Goss, author of The Strange Case of the Alchemist’s Daughter

Greer Gilman’s mythic fantasies are Moonwise, Cloud & Ashes, and Lightwards. Her Ben Jonson mysteries, set in the theatre world of 1600s London, are Cry Murder! in a Small Voice and Exit, Pursued by a Bear. Her fiction has won the World Fantasy, Otherwise (Tiptree), Shirley Jackson, and Crawford awards. She has written on the languages of the fantastic, on archetypes of girls in fantasy, and on Sylvia Townsend Warner. Her writings are quoted in the Oxford English Dictionary. A graduate of Wellesley College and the University of Cambridge, and for many years a librarian at Harvard, she lives in Cambridge, Massachusetts.
