J. Bruce Jacobs is Emeritus Professor of Asian Languages and Studies at Monash University in Melbourne, Australia. His extensive list of publications includes two recent books: Local Politics in Rural Taiwan under Dictatorship and Democracy (Norwalk, CT: EastBridge, 2008) and Democratizing Taiwan (Leiden and Boston: Brill, 2012). Professor Jacobs’ field research in China and Taiwan covers more than four decades. In addition to being fluent in Mandarin Chinese, Professor Jacobs also speaks considerable Hokkien or Taiwanese.
