Cuba: The Doctrine of the Lie is a thoroughly researched and profoundly revealing work on two themes of vital importance to the world today: the true nature of totalitarianism and how religion, philosophy, culture, tradition, and individual freedom are the most effective antibodies for countering this deadly ontological virus. Approaching Cuba’s history as both a rallying icon for the radical left and an engine of freedom activism for the powerful Cuban-American community in the United States, this study helps dispel the black legend about life in Cuba before the communist triumph in 1959, reveals the destructive ideology behind the façade of Che Guevara’s socialism, explains how so-called agrarian reform camouflaged the structuring of a police state, and provides unique insights into the dynamics of the struggle of the Cuban Resistance. Cuba: The Doctrine of the Lie explains how totalitarianism was established and consolidated in Cuba and assesses the repercussions that event has had for America’s domestic ideological spectrum. Resulting from personal conversations with key actors, research into original sources, and a thorough knowledge of Cuban history, this book represents a vital contribution not just to the field of studies of totalitarianism but also to the study of Cuban history as a whole.

“Having lost his home and nation as a child, Orlando Gutiérrez-Boronat has turned his tragedy into an act of generosity for the rest of us. With meticulous and sober analysis, he assesses the tragedy that befell Cuba in 1959 and ushered in mass dehumanization.”
-Fredo Arias-King, President of the CASLA Institute, Prague
Orlando Gutiérrez-Boronat was born in Havana, Cuba, in 1965. He holds a Ph.D. in International Studies from the University of Miami and graduate and undergraduate degrees from Florida International University. He has been an invited lecturer on political theory at Georgetown University’s Global Leadership Program and has been a professor of history and political science at institutions of higher learning over the past 20 years. He has published five books, and his articles have appeared in prominent publications in the United States and abroad. As co-founder and spokesman of the Cuban Democratic Directorate (Directorio Demócratico Cubano), one of the most widely known organizations in the struggle for democracy in Cuba, Dr. Gutiérrez-Boronat has spoken around the world on Cuba’s struggle for human rights and democracy. He is coordinator of the Assembly of the Cuban Resistance, a unifying coalition of pro-democracy organizations inside and outside Cuba. Dr. Gutiérrez-Boronat has a strong media presence and is frequently interviewed by various media venues on Cuba, Latin America, and the struggle for freedom and human rights around the world.
