Lemebel.
ENGLISH DESCRIPTION
Lemebel. The beauty of a fierce literature.
De perlas y cicatrices ( Of Pearls and Scars), first published in 1998, brings together a series of chronicles portraying a sad cast of characters from Chile’s high society and entertainment circles of the 1980s and 1990s, wandering through dusty stages in search of stardom. The demi-gods of local celebrity culture are also dethroned in these pages, exposed alongside the victims, villains, and accomplices of the dictatorship, forming a somber gallery of figures that refuse to fade into oblivion.
“This book emerges from a process, a public trial, a spat-out Nuremberg directed at those who were complicit in horror. For them, glass ceilings shattered by the posthumous unveiling of their opportunistic silence, belated tributes to others, perhaps still damp from the humiliation of their wounds. Portraits, atmospheres, landscapes, pearls and scars linked together in recent memory, still recoverable, still numb within the scarred shell of its fragile testimonial claw,” writes the author.
The explosive impact of these daily chronicles, gathered here in book form, becomes an arsenal in which a wicked sense of humor cannot soften the disgust and anguish it provokes. To hear Lemebel’s voice again is an opportunity to explore the hidden side of twentieth-century Chilean history, guided by a living language and a deeply unsettling voice.
