Gr 3-6 – "A guest speaker invites a group of students to Antarctica to see the amazing ecosystem for themselves in this lively graphic novel written by a polar expedition leader. The story begins with Marc addressing a class and then taking the students to the frozen continent. While their trip is imaginary, the facts they learn are very real. They discover that the Antarctic food web depends on tiny phytoplankton and krill. A pie chart compares the biomass of krill in the Southern Ocean to that of all wild land animals in the world. Other pages discuss various species, such as Weddell seals and sea leopards, share diagrams of how penguins sneeze salt out their noses, and explain how skuas help maintain balance in the ecosystem. Vibrantly colored cartoon illustrations show the students in their small boat next to humpback whales, visiting Port Lockroy and admiring the Adélie penguins while bombarding Marc with questions. A QR code offers readers a chance to hear a Weddell seal and its pup. Back matter includes a glossary, index, and instructions on how to register with the Ocean Youth Academy. VERDICT Helpful science facts mixed with humor will appeal to readers who enjoy the “Science Comics” series and similar graphic novels." –Suzanne Costner, SLJ
