Early Islamic law in Kufa presents the critical edition of seventeen Arabic jurisprudence texts recently discovered in three manuscripts in Cairo, Djerba and dating from the middle of the 2nd/8th century. These texts were written by Ibadi scholars in Kufa and Basra and were taken by their bearers of knowledge ḥamalt ’l-‘ilm to North Africa and partly into Oman where they had a large following in the Ibāḍī community. These could be constituted among the earliest extant body of Muslim law and are vital for the study of the initial development and formation Islamic law.
