A compelling vision of the Catholic university as a place where intellectual formation and human flourishing come together
What is the deepest purpose of a Catholic university? Now available in English, Educating Intelligent Hearts invites readers to rediscover higher education as more than the transmission of knowledge or preparation for a profession. Thivierge argues that, at its best, education forms people capable of listening attentively to reality, thinking deeply about the world around them, and acting with responsibility and care
Drawing on the Gospel and the intellectual and spiritual tradition of the Church, Thivierge considers the challenges and possibilities facing Catholic higher education today. At the heart of his vision is the “intelligent heart”: an approach to education that joins serious thought with attentive listening and responsible action. The university, in this vision, is not simply a place for acquiring knowledge but a community devoted to forming people capable of engaging thoughtfully and responsibly with the world.
Neither a technical study of higher education nor an institutional manifesto, Educating Intelligent Hearts offers a thoughtful and accessible meditation on what makes a university genuinely transformative. Thivierge asks Catholic institutions to reconsider their educational mission in light of the Gospel and the Church’s tradition while remaining responsive to the demands of the present. His reflections offer both a reaffirmation of Catholic education and an invitation to imagine new paths for its future.
Concise and forward-looking, Educating Intelligent Hearts will appeal to university leaders, faculty, students, educators, and anyone interested in the future of Catholic higher education and the enduring question of what education is ultimately for.
