En octubre de 1963, cuando Annie Ernaux se halla en Ruán estudiando filología, descubre que está embarazada. Desde el primer momento no le cabe la menor duda de que no quiere tener esa criatura no deseada. En una sociedad en la que se penaliza el aborto con prisión y multa, se encuentra sola; hasta su pareja se desentiende del asunto. In October 1963, while studying philology in Rouen, Annie Ernaux discovers that she is pregnant. From the very beginning, she knows without a doubt that she does not want to have this unwanted child. In a society where abortion is punishable by prison and fines, she finds herself alone; even her partner turns away. Beyond the abandonment and discrimination imposed by a society that refuses to support her, there remains the struggle against the profound horror and pain of a clandestine abortion.
