Why does the Argentinian narrative of the early 21st century return so insistently to the 19th century, the country’s founding era? Why does it focus so intensely on the political agency of the popular sectors – the people? How do the dozens of literary texts analysed in this book represent the relationship between the people and the elites in early Argentinian history? How do they engage in dialogue with its earlier visions? This book seeks to answer these questions, proposing that the prominence of these themes in recent Argentinian culture is closely tied to increasing social inequalities and the resurgence of (anti)populist movements in the contemporary world.
