La señorita Arundell es una acaudalada anciana solterona a quien sus sobrinos desean ver muerta para ;poder desahogarse de sus apremios económicos. Cuando sufre un accidente al caer por las escaleras, todos lo achacan a la pelotita de goma dejada por Bob, su perro. Pero la anciana desconfía, y piensa que han tratado de asesinarla. El 17 de abril escribe una carta a Poirot solicitando su ayuda, pero este no la recibe, misteriosamente, hasta el 28 de junio. Para ese entonces, la señorita Arundell ha sido asesinada, y el único testigo del crimen es Bob, su querida mascota.

But the more she thought about her fall, the more convinced she became that one of her relatives was trying to kill her.… On April 17th she wrote her suspicions in a letter to Hercule Poirot. Mysteriously, he didn’t receive the letter until June 28th…by which time Emily was already dead.…
