Environmental engineering is an interdisciplinary science that combines biology, ecology, geology, geography, mathematics, chemistry, physics, agronomy, medicine, economics and all technical sciences. The main objective of environmental engineering is to use the understanding of the environment and technological progress to serve humanity by reducing the production of environmental hazards and the impact of these hazards already present in soil, water and air. The main activities of an environmental engineer include water supply, wastewater and waste management, air pollution control and noise pollution control, environmental sustainability, environmental impact assessment, climate change, etc. Therefore, the textbook "Environmental Engineering: Basic Principles" is divided into eight areas that are important for all current and future environmental engineers. This textbook provides a comprehensive overview of necessary information for a reorientation of society in relation to nature and the return of nature to the center.

Prof. Vesna Tomašić, PhD was born on June 18, 1964 in Sisak. She graduated from the University of Zagreb Faculty of Chemical Engineering and Technology in 1999. She has worked in the Department of Reaction Engineering and Catalysis at her home Faculty since 1990. Since 2016, she has been a full professor with a permanent position in the field of technical sciences, the field of chemical engineering, branch of reaction engineering. She teaches numerous courses at all levels of study. Her narrow area of scientific interest is catalytic reaction engineering with special emphasis on the development and application of catalytic processes in environmental protection. She has published 2 chapters in books, 75 scientific papers (mostly in journals cited in tertiary publications), three chapters in university textbooks in Croatian and English, several professional papers and more than 40 papers on popularisation of the profession. She is the editor of the English university textbook Environmental Engineering – Basic Principles published by De Gruyter. She is a member of several national and international professional associations.  She has held numerous positions at the Faculty (Vice-Dean for Teaching and Science (2005-2009), Coordinator of the undergraduate and graduate studies in Chemical Engineering (2005-2010), Head of the doctoral study in Chemical Engineering (2010-2014), etc.

Prof. Bruno Zelić, PhD was born on July 15, 1973, in Osijek, Republic of Croatia. Since 2013, he has been a full professor at the Department of Reaction Engineering and Catalysis, University of Zagreb, Faculty of Chemical Engineering and Technology. From 2013 to 2017 he was Dean and from 2009 to 2013 Vice Dean of the Faculty of Chemical Engineering and Technology, University of Zagreb. He worked for two years (2000-2002) as a junior researcher at the Institute of Biotechnology II, Research Centre Juelich, Germany. He received several awards for his scientific and professional work: The Rector's Award (1994 and 1995), the Annual Award of the Society of University Teachers and Other Scientists in Zagreb (1999), the Award of the Croatian Society of Chemical Engineers and Technologists (2003), the Vera Johanides Award of the Croatian Academy of Engineering (2007), the Rikard Podhorsky Award of the Croatian Academy of Engineering (2021) and the Croatian Annual Award for Science (2018). His scientific interests are in the field of chemical engineering and in the development of bioprocesses using microdevices. Bruno Zelić, PhD, has published more than 120 scientific and professional papers in journals and proceedings of scientific and professional conferences, five book chapters and two patents. He edited the textbook Environmental Engineering – Basic Principles (published by De Gruyter) and co-authored six book chapters and two patents. As an invited lecturer, he gave more than 20 lectures at national and international scientific conferences and participated with more than 140 oral or poster presentations at national and international scientific conferences. Bruno Zelić is Editor-in-Chief of the journals Chemical and Biochemical Engineering Quarterly, Engineering Power and Annual of Croatian Academy of Technical Sciences. He is a member of the Croatian Academy of Engineering, the European Academy of Sciences and Arts, the European Federation of Chemical Engineering and the Council for Technological Development of the Croatian Academy of Sciences and Arts.
