Why do some people experience inclusion and opportunity while others face exclusion and disadvantage? Sociological perspectives on equality, diversity and inclusion (EDI) help us answer this question by examining how power, identity and social structures shape experiences in work and public life.
This book introduces the key concepts, debates and practices that define EDI, bridging theory and real-world application. It explores the foundations of EDI through global and comparative perspectives, activism, and practice across areas such as education, health and welfare, criminal justice, technology, work and culture. Adopting a sociological lens, it examines inequalities linked to gender, ethnicity and race, disability, age, sexuality and social class.
Key features for teaching and learning include:
· A clear thematic structure that connects EDI theory to real-world practice
· Global and comparative examples that show how context shapes EDI in different settings
· Case studies, key readings and activities that support discussion, reflection and applied learning
Ideal for undergraduate and postgraduate students, as well as practitioners and policymakers, this book provides a clear and accessible foundation for understanding and engaging with EDI in contemporary societies.
