This book brings together extracts from a variety of proposals for uniting Europe, drawn up over the centuries. Each text is accompanied by a short commentary. The result is a fascinating compilation which reveals that the dream of a Europe at peace with itself has roots which go far back in history, and that many earlier ideas for a united Europe already contained the seeds of today's European Union.
This work has been compiled by the General Secretariat of the Council of the European Union, the principal decision-making institution of the European Union. [NP] ‘Europe - giving shape to an idea’ was edited by Jose Tavares da Silva, a PhD candidate in international politics and conflict resolution at the University of Coimbra, Portugal. His areas of expertise include civil society, international conflict resolution and sinology.
