This book explores the concept of the “context” in the study of Islamic art history. The chapters discuss new conceptual models and approaches for analyzing the historical contexts of works of art and architecture. The articles were first presented at the 8th Biennial Symposium of the Historians of Islamic Art Association (HIAA), held in 2023 in Houston, Texas, at the Museum of Fine Arts and Rice University. Dr. Aimée Froom is curator, Art of the Islamic Worlds, and co-Director, World Faiths Initiative, at the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston, where she completed a major expansion of the Art of the Islamic Worlds galleries. She has over 25 years of museum, teaching, and publishing experience.
Farshid Emami (PhD Harvard University, 2017) is Associate Professor of art history at Rice University. He specializes in the history of architecture and the arts in early modern Islamic lands. He is the author of Isfahan: Architecture and Urban Experience in Early Modern Iran (2024).
Julie Timte is a doctoral candidate in the Department of Art History at Rice University. Her research interests include the material and artistic intersections between the Italian peninsula and the Islamic worlds. Julie currently teaches Upper School History at St. John's School in Houston, TX.
