Fasten your seatbelt for an ultimate drive with the cars that have reshaped our world. These 50 period snapshots of world history over the last 150 years are not just about pistons and panels; they’re amazing stories of heroic people and extraordinary events.
From Bertha Benz stealing her husband’s Motorwagen to Leonardo DiCaprio driving up a Hollywood red carpet in a Toyota Prius, this book explains not just what these cars were – but why they really mattered.
It’s Henry Ford putting a Model T in every driveway. It’s the VW Beetle transforming from Hitler’s pet into a peace-and-love icon. It’s the Beatles in a Mini Cooper during Swinging Sixties London and Steve McQueen cruising San Francisco in his Ford Mustang.
The mix of entertaining expert narrative and spectacular images brings these cars to life and creates an impressive catalogue of style, influence and personal achievement. Fifty Cars That Changed The Course of History is cultural and automotive history at full throttle.
Simon Heptinstall is a former newspaper and magazine journalist behind the globally successful The Big Book of Car Trivia and 1001 Cars to Drive Before You Die. Simon has also written a collection of funny fictional short stories, held the world record for most countries driven to in one day …and famously controlled a Zastava Yugo car during a road test when the steering wheel fell off in his hands.
A former taxi-driver and garage manager, Simon claims he is the only writer to have appeared on the cover of BBC Top Gear magazine, been stopped by the police for having flames shooting out of his exhaust pipe … and is still slim enough to fit through the sunroof of a 1950s Fiat 500. He lives in England’s West Country with an old Volvo, two palm trees and a view of the sea from his kitchen sink.
