Discover the science behind how life changes over time through quick, engaging five-minute reads that make one of science’s most important ideas easy to understand.
Evolution explains the incredible diversity of life on Earth—from tiny genetic changes within populations to the emergence of new species over millions of years. But understanding it doesn’t need to be difficult. Five-Minute Naturalist: Evolution breaks big ideas into short, engaging chapters that can be read in just a few minutes at a time. Written in a clear, conversational style by Bob Zink and brought to life with beautiful colored-pencil illustrations by Mel Bryant, this family-friendly guide helps readers of all ages build a deeper understanding of the processes that have shaped life on our planet.
Learn how DNA, genes, mutations, and natural selection drive evolutionary change. Find out how fossils, heredity, adaptation, speciation, and extinction provide evidence for the history of life, revealing the remarkable connections among humans, animals, plants, fungi, and every other living thing.
Whether you’re a curious reader, budding naturalist, educator, student, or parent looking to answer big questions, Five-Minute Naturalist: Evolution offers an accessible introduction to one of the central ideas in modern science. Thought-provoking, informative, and easy to pick up, it’s the perfect way to learn about evolution—five minutes at a time.
Inside You’ll Find:
- Short, engaging chapters that fit into any busy schedule
- Clear explanations of essential evolution and genetics concepts
- Real-world examples of adaptation, fossils, heredity, and natural selection
- Connections between wildlife, ecosystems, human biology, and the history of life on Earth
Robert “Bob” Zink hails from south Minneapolis and is currently a professor in the School of Natural Resources and the School of Biological Sciences. He is also a curator in the Nebraska State Museum at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln.
Mel Bryant grew up in the woods of the Midwest and has been drawing since the age of 5. Colored pencil is Mel’s medium of choice, and some digital cleanup is done once a drawing is complete. Mel finds inspiration while hiking, kayaking, rock hunting, and traveling.
