Robertson Davies has been called the most important Canadian playwright of the postwar period. These two plays from the 1940s prove that great writing and important themes never go out of style.
One of Canada's most popular authors, Robertson Davies was born in Thamesville, Ontario, on August 28, 1913, and grew up there and in Renfrew and Kingston; he was educated at Upper Canada College, Queen's University, and Balliol college, Oxford. Davies has received honourary degrees from twenty-one Canadian and American universities, Trinity College, Dublin and Oxford University, and was the first Canadian member of the American Academy and Institute of Arts and Letters. He is a Fellow of the Royal Society of Literature; Honourary Fellow, Balliol College; Member of the Order of Ontario; and a Companion of the Order of Canada.
