French popular cinema of the 1950s re-examines a body of films long disparaged by New Wave criticism as constrained by a so-called ‘tradition of quality’. Challenging this narrow view, the book situates mainstream French cinema within the material, industrial and social conditions of the postwar decade. It analyses how filmmakers worked collaboratively with stars, technicians, writers and designers to sustain popular genres such as comedy, thriller and costume drama at a moment of limited resources and strict censorship. These films addressed contentious issues including the Nazi Occupation, colonialism, legal injustice and gender inequality while dominating the domestic box office. Drawing on the work of twenty-five directors and hundreds of creative personnel, the volume foregrounds collective authorship and technological innovation, demonstrating how popular cinema expanded representational possibilities and reshaped genre conventions in ways that informed, rather than opposed, subsequent New Wave practices.
