Canada can shape a better world by focussing on critical issues where we can make a real difference.
At this critical time, Canada’s engagement with the world is scattered, deeply risk-adverse, and increasingly ineffective. Canada is present everywhere, but consequential almost nowhere.
It was not always this way. For much of the twentieth century, Canada played a valued “middle power” role that was good for Canada and for the world. That time is gone and a new paradigm is needed to renew our relevance. Canadians must replace the outmoded notion of a “middle power” with a focused, sustained commitment on critical issues where we, as a country, can be truly consequential.
This will require major changes in how Canada crafts its foreign policy. It will require taking risks and holding ourselves to account for real results so that, as a “consequential country,” Canada can help shape a safer, more stable, and prosperous world.
