The modern reception of Thucydides has emerged as a vibrant and steadily expanding research field over the last few decades. However, the presence of Thucydides in non-Western and global contexts has never been thoroughly investigated. This historiographical gap appears all the more conspicuous when we consider the growing need, widely perceived in the field of classical studies, to reconsider the discipline in a global sense, beyond Eurocentric and colonial paradigms.

Global Thucydides is the first step to fill this gap by investigating instances, ways, and reasons why Thucydides became, over the past two centuries, an object of study within cultures significantly distant from those of Western Europe. In this context, the Greek historian is studied not only as a founding text of the European historiographical and political tradition, but also as a potentially shared heritage of very different cultures, from the Americas to Africa, from Eastern Europe and the Caucasus to the Far East.

The book offers the first comprehensive mapping of the global receptions of Thucydides.
