— G.W. Cottrell, Jr.

"This study is a comprehensive survey of the development of American Ornithology up to the beginning of the 19th century. … The paper is well illustrated and indexed and there is an excellent bibliography of about 850 titles."

"The reader will be impressed by the erudite research that has gone into the volume. Many unrecorded prints and documents were brought to light. The pleasing style and vast amount of information contained in the ‘History’ should command the attention of every person interested in ornithology."
