Ce livre montre qu’Ibn Khaldûn a élaboré une conception sécularisée de l’histoire, replacée dans son contexte intellectuel prémoderne. Il propose une double généalogie : celle des concepts khaldûniens, inscrits dans les savoirs de son temps (falsafa, kalām, uṣūl al-fiqh, miroirs des princes, géographie et historiographie arabes), et celle de leurs traductions modernes, souvent infléchies par des catégories européennes. En analysant la science du ʿumrān, l’ouvrage met en lumière son originalité et les emprunts qui la structurent. Il montre qu’Ibn Khaldûn opère un déplacement du théologico-politique vers une intelligibilité immanente de l’histoire, fondée sur les dynamiques internes des sociétés humaines. Cette analyse révèle, en contexte islamique prémoderne, l’existence de formes autonomes de pensée du politique et de l’histoire, porteuses de sécularisation.
This book argues that Ibn Khaldūn developed a secularized conception of history, grounded in his premodern intellectual context. It offers a double genealogy: first, of Khaldūnian concepts as embedded in the bodies of knowledge of his time (falsafa, kalām, uṣūl al-fiqh, mirrors for princes, geography, and Arabic historiography); second, of their modern translations, often shaped by European conceptual frameworks. Through an analysis of the science of ʿumrān, the book highlights both its originality and the borrowings that structure it. It shows that Ibn Khaldūn shifts the theologico-political framework toward an immanent intelligibility of history, based on the internal dynamics of human societies. This analysis reveals the existence, in the premodern Islamic context, of autonomous forms of political and historical thought carrying secularizing dynamics.
