William R. Coe (1926-2009) was Curator of the Penn Museum's American Section and Professor in the Anthropology Department of the University of Pennsylvania. A Mayanist, Coe was widely known for his research and publications on the Classic Maya city of Tikal in northern Guatemala, and was Director of the Tikal Project from 1963-1970. He published a number of volumes on the excavations at Tikal. William A. Haviland has done archaeological and ethnographic research in Belize, Guatemala, and Vermont. He founded the Department of Anthropology at the University of Vermont, where he taught for many years. He has published a number of books on anthropology and archaeology and is coeditor of the Tikal Reports series.
