This pioneering listening-first approach to teaching Egyptian Colloquial Arabic gives students the skills to master everyday conversations

Samira is a young Egyptian woman who lives with her family in Cairo, and it is through her daily interactions with colleagues, relatives, friends, and neighbors that learners are given a gateway into understanding the dynamic world of Egyptian Colloquial Arabic (ECA). This novel dialogue-based approach to teaching ECA foregrounds the skill of listening: a key but often overlooked tool in developing proficiency in a dialect.

Structured around 32 original audio dialogues, students will hear conversations that mirror ordinary day-to-day interactions, such as chatting about weekend plans, visits to the doctor, or apartment hunting. Comprehension and speaking exercises accompany each dialogue to deepen engagement and language acquisition, as well as to strengthen cultural understanding.

This book is designed for elementary+ learners of ECA, especially students who have already had some exposure to ECA or Modern Standard Arabic (MSA). It caters to learners at the A1-A2 (CEFR) or Novice-Mid to Intermediate-Low (ACTFL).
