Jesuit Philosophy on the Eve of Modernity, edited by Cristiano Casalini, is the first comprehensive volume to trace the origins and development of Jesuit philosophy during the first century of the Society of Jesus (1540–c.1640). Filling a gap in the history of philosophy, the volume seeks to identify and examine the limits of the “distinctiveness” of Jesuit philosophers during an age of dramatic turbulence in Western thought. The eighteen contributions by some of the leading specialists in various fields are divided into four sections, which guide the reader through cultural milieus, thematic issues, and intellectual biographies to show the impact of Jesuit philosophy on early modern thought.

"a rich image of the presence of the institutional context proper to the Society of Jesus in the development of Jesuit philosophy in the first century of its existence, as well as a systematic presentation of its contribution to various philosophical disciplines; a panoramic study of the five mentioned Jesuit authors, and a demonstration of the influence of that thought in other modern authors."

Juan Antonio Senent de Frutos, Universidad Loyola Andalucía, in Journal of Jesuit Studies, volume 6, pp 545-548

"This volume, edited by Cristiano Casalini, an expert in Jesuit pedagogy based at Boston College, seeks to produce a holistic overview of Jesuit philosophy by bringing together leading authorities in Jesuit studies. Its impressive scope comprehensively covers most major topics of Jesuit philosophy, including epistemology, logic, psychology, rhetoric, pedagogy, moral theology, metaphysics, and political philosophy [...] the editor is to be commended for assembling such an impressive volume which no doubt will become a standard introduction for Jesuit philosophy.”

Daniel Canaris, Sun Yat-sen University, in Archivum Historicum Societatis Iesu 89.178
