This publication systematically categorizes and provides a nearly complete overview of the great variety of maps, both manuscript and printed, that have been made of the Dutch Antilles. The map descriptions are clarified with information on the creators of the maps and the historical background of the map image. The author has extensively studied how and for which reasons these maps were created. The cartobibliography is preceded by an extensive introduction in which the history of the islands and their inhabitants are described.

"Magnificent book"
The Daily Herald, St. Maarten, May 30, 2016.
"Renkema’s Kaarten van de Nederlandse Antillen is an impressive survey of map production in the Dutch colonial West Indies. [...] Just as with all other publications in the Explokart series, it is beautifully illustrated in colour. The maps and charts are presented in a handsome and regular format, and each entry is fully described. All map inscriptions have been painstakingly and extensively transcribed by the author. Furthermore, the book is a treasure trove for anyone researching the history of the Netherlands Antilles. Last but not least, although a somewhat weighty tome, it is a pleasure to leaf through."
Sjoerd de Meer (Maritiem Museum Rotterdam), in: Imago Mundi 69:2 2017, p. 259-260.

Dr. W.E. (Wim) Renkema (1942) studied history and social geography at the Vrije Universiteit in Amsterdam. He worked as a history teacher (including six years in Curaçao), vice principal and deputy rector. In 1981 he obtained his doctorate with a thesis on the Curaçao plantation business in the nineteenth century. Since then he has published several articles on the history of Curaçao and a book on Governor R.F. of Raders, A Life in the West. Van Raders and his activities in Curaçao (Brill, 2009). In examining the cartography of the six Dutch islands in the Caribbean Sea, his interest in old maps and the history of the area came together.
