In the past 100 years, the average lifespan in the United States alone has increased by nearly thirty years. However, the years gained are being plagued by non-infectious, killer chronic diseases in epidemic proportions that are increasingly contributing to poor health and premature death in later years. Americans may be squandering the longevity they gained in the twentieth century by succumbing in the twenty-first century to these preventable, killer chronic diseases, largely attributable to dietary and lifestyle choices.

The prevalence of chronic diseases such as heart disease, type-2 diabetes, cancer, and obesity along with the steadily rising human and economic costs surrounding them have spurred research into the causes and risk factors of these diseases for several decades. Researchers have been able to establish evidence-based links between an increased risk for these chronic diseases and exposure to certain environmental, lifestyle, and genetic factors.

In this book, the authors explore the evidence-based connection between lifestyle choices and these killer chronic diseases, providing insight into choices that will hold the disease at bay and effective use of recommended preventative services for early detection and intervention.

Available evidence unequivocally points to the fact that chronic diseases strike people with a particular set of lifestyle choices more often than they affect others who do not make those choices. Adopting healthier choices at any age, and stage of disease progression has proportional benefits. This lifestyle-disease connection makes it possible to not only prevent a chronic disease from setting in but also to stop it in its tracks when detected early and sometimes even reverse it.

Finally, the case examples contributed by the authors bring to life the connection between a person’s lifestyle choices, exposure to modifiable and nonmodifiable risks, and ultimately the development, progression, and outcome of a chronic disease based on lifestyle-related risk exposure.

Kudos to the Modanados for collecting an enormous volume of evidence, clearly presenting it to us, and concluding with their invaluable recommendations, thereby encouraging all of us to go in the right direction to ensure our good health.

Susan Alexander, author of A Quicker Blood and Jealous Mistress

"What's the latest information about cholesterol levels and various kinds of fats or oils? How much is the maximum amount of sugar/salt you should have per day? How much physical activity should you be getting? When should you ask your doctor for additional or new screenings or tests? These are among the many questions this very practical guide to disease prevention answers.

The authors provide a data-driven but very clearly written examination of four "killer diseases": (1) cardiovascular disease, (2) diabetes; (3) cancer, and (4) obesity. They address how to evaluate one's own risk factors, what happens once one of these diseases starts to set in and how it will progress without intervention, what other people have done specifically to reverse or slow these diseases, and what kind of screening is appropriate. They provide numerous case studies of patients who struggled with these illnesses and how their actions (or inactions) affected the outcome. The explanations are very clear, and medical terminology is carefully defined.

The writers (a Ph.D. in nursing and a physician) offer many ideas for making and also sustaining healthy lifestyle choices; they inspire us with positive actions to protect one's own health from these modern epidemics." - Mary McVey Gill

"This Is an excellent book for all ages, but especially recommended for young families, who will benefit from the sound advice in the book for life if incorporated early in their lives. Good habits are as difficult to break as bad ones. This book is written for laymen, in understandable, non-technical language. I highly recommend it." - Gerry Anne Lenhart Ph.D., Clinical Psychologist

"Swarna Moldanado and Alex Moldanado, the authors of Killer Diseases, Modern-Day Epidemics, have performed an excellent public service by clearly describing how lifestyle choices may lead to the development of, or help in the prevention of chronic diseases such as cardiovascular disease, diabetes and cancer. This book is an educational introduction, with sufficient detail of scientific and medical information to create an understanding of how and why adopting good lifestyle practices will provide life-long benefits. I would recommend this book to anyone seeking a better understanding of how the many factors in our lives, such as diet, exercise, stress, healthcare, and socioeconomic conditions, interplay, and how we may manage them to our advantage." - Marshall Dinowitz, Sc.D.
