With nearly fifty monasteries and sites of anachoreses, the desert of al-Ḥīra in Mesopotamia, in a frontier position between Empires, was really a Thebaid. This study traces its development and traditions over almost six centuries. The material gathered, in dialogue with archaeological data, makes it possible to identify the various movements that took root there and to offer an in-depth analysis of this monastic community in its interactions with the Persian, Syriac, and Arabic milieux. From this vast fresco the memory of a multifaceted monastic centre, both attractive and dynamic, emerges, which played an essential role in anchoring Christianity in the Middle East.
