A mitad de la noche la vida parece encontrar su desenlace, pero es justo en la mayor oscuridad cuando comienza a manifestarse la luz que precede al amanecer: ese momento en que las tinieblas quedan atrás y emerge el día con la incertidumbre propia de un nuevo comienzo. «El tiempo abre las alas» y «se aleja el día hacia ninguna parte... empezaste a morir y a darte cuenta de que el misterio no va a extenuarse nunca. El despertar es un bosque donde se recupera lo perdido y se destruye lo ganado. Y el día futuro, una miseria que te encuentra a solas con tus pobres palabras».

Publicados entre 1958 y 1962, en los poemas de Los elementos de la noche la evocación nocturna y el angustioso amanecer son las constantes por las que transita José Emilio Pacheco en busca de la vida perdurable.

In the middle of the night life seems to find its denouement, but it is precisely in the greatest darkness that the light that precedes dawn begins to manifest: that moment when darkness is left behind and the day emerges with the uncertainty of a new beginning.
