NICCOLÒ MACHIAVELLI is recognized as one of the great thinkers of modern political thought: he dared to examine power without idealizing it. He served as an official in an unstable republic and as a diplomat amid wars and conspiracies; a man who experienced the rise to positions of influence, as well as downfall, exile, and torture. Drawing on those experiences, he wrote about power, ambition, conflict, and the fragility of governments. Over time, his name became associated with manipulation and cynicism, often reduced to a simplistic caricature. In reality, he was a sharp observer of human nature and of the tensions that shape collective life. He is the author of The Prince, the landmark treatise that separated politics from ethics and emphasized that effective leadership requires ruthlessness, adaptability, and a clear-eyed understanding of power, above abstract moral ideals.
