In Melodised Speech Amy de la Bretèque offers an analysis of Yezidis of Armenia’s oral tradition, mainly lamentations and epic narratives. Amongst the Yezidis of Armenia, mourning, exile, and heroism are evoked through a specific mode of expression. Combining ethnography, acoustic analysis, and linguistics, the author shows that this use of the voice constructs an ideal of life connecting the living to the absent and the deceased.
The English language translation from French was funded by USIAS, fellowship 2025.
