In Memoir of a disappearing world Jenny Ferber offers a reading of The Churches and Monasteries of Egypt by Abū al-Makārim, a Christian Arabic text from the heart of Islamic Egypt at the turn of the 12th and 13th centuries. Often read as a source for information on the churches and monasteries of the title, this reading explores the work itself, its sources, themes and techniques, to reveal the world view it presents. At the height of Saladin’s power, the work describes a triumphant Christian world stretching throughout Egypt and from as far as Spain, to Constantinople, Baghdad and India, blanketed in Christian sites and stories. While occasionally brought low, this Christian community consistently rises again and rebuilds through its wealth, its social status and observance of proper ritual. The picture emerges of a Christian community in Fatimid and Ayyubid Egypt, prosperous and self-confident under its Muslim rulers.
