This book translates research on speech acquisition into clinical practice for speech-language pathologists working with multilingual children. It explores the multilingual and multicultural aspects of speech sound disorders, with reference to 151 different languages in this second edition. Research chapters summarise relevant work to date while application chapters provide vignettes from particular geographical or linguistic contexts, offering practical advice for diagnosis, assessment and intervention. Combined, these approaches demonstrate the complexity of issues when working with multilingual children with speech sound disorders and will be key reading for speech and language pathology practitioners, researchers and graduate students.
Helen L. Blake is Senior Research Fellow at Charles Sturt University, Australia. She is a practising speech pathologist and her research explores communication rights and speech assessment, diagnosis and intervention for multilingual speakers.
Sharynne McLeod is Distinguished Professor and Director of the Children’s Voices Centre at Charles Sturt University, Australia. She is President of the International Clinical Phonetics and Linguistics Association and has received Honors of the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association and Life Membership of Speech Pathology Australia.
Kate Margetson is Lecturer in Speech Pathology at Charles Sturt University, Australia. Her research interests include speech assessment, diagnosis and intervention for multilingual children and bilingual Vietnamese-English speech development. She is a Director of Trinh Foundation Australia collaborating with Vietnamese people to establish speech therapy as a profession in Vietnam.
Brian A. Goldstein is Dean of the College of Health Professions at Pace University, USA. His work explores phonological development and disorders in monolingual Spanish and Spanish-English bilingual children. He is a Fellow of the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association.
