Music comes to our aid when confronted with a sense of our own mortality as here revealed in a variety of contexts and moods. Douglas Davies is Professor in the Study of Religion and Director of the Centre for Death and Life Studies at Durham University. He is a Doctor of Letters of Oxford University, and a Fellow of the British Academy, the Academy of Social Sciences, and the Learned Society of Wales.
