This volume contains a selection of documents relating to Nicaragua’s forced annexation of the Mosquito Reservation, an autonomous territory which was located on today’s Caribbean Coast of Nicaragua. Documents from foreign office files FO 420 Further Correspondence Respecting the Mosquito Reserve written by the reservation’s Indigenous Mosquito and African-descendent Creoles leaders provide eye-witness accounts of Nicaragua’s invasion, as well as details of Mosquito diplomacy to restore the reservation’s autonomy. The documents shows the Mosquito as active political agents, who engaged in transatlantic diplomacy to regain their centuries-old autonomy.
