This chapter reviews optimising the functionality of phosphate-solubilising microorganisms (PSM) in promoting crop nutrient use efficiency. It begins by providing a short review on the ecological role of PSM and their importance in the microbial community. The chapter then goes on to discuss how the performance of PSM can be evaluated and the potential barriers to their success in soil-plant environments. It moves on to provide guidelines for robust testing of PSM, inoculants, then also highlights the ecological function of PSM for phosphorus cycling as a component of the wider microbial community.
