Parenting is deeply shaped by gendered norms and inequalities. Parenting and Gender offers a comprehensive sociological examination of how gender structures parenting practices and how parenting, in turn, reproduces or challenges these inequalities across diverse contexts.
Grounded in international and interdisciplinary scholarship, this edited volume brings together chapters that explore the complex relationship between gender and parenting. Featuring diverse contributions, the volume examines how gender ideologies shape caregiving roles, emotional labour, and decision making within families, as well as how these dynamics vary across contexts. Situating parenting within broader social transformations including changing family structures, labour market participation, and evolving discussions around equality, the volume highlights how expectations of motherhood and fatherhood continue to be unevenly distributed while also showing the ways individuals and families negotiate and reconfigure these norms.
Presenting intersectional and comparative perspectives, Volume 39 of Contemporary Perspectives in Family Research makes a significant contribution to understanding parenting as a site where gender inequality is both sustained and contested. A critical framework for analysing parenting through the lens of gender and social inequality, it is insightful reading for scholars and students in sociology, family studies and gender studies.
