Why should anyone care about, much less study, something so commonplace as preaching and sermons? Preaching and the Sermon in the Twentieth Century answers this question. The authors argue that preaching and the sermon belong together as a separate discipline, sermon studies. This book is the first systematic introduction to the field. Focusing on the period 1890-2019 and preaching in the Christian tradition, the essays in this collection examine the definitions of a sermon and the developments in preaching and the sermon in different areas of the world. Unique to this book are the authors’ discussions of the impact of “new” technologies such as TV and the crucial role played by women preachers. Sermon studies is important: this book explains why.
