This book is a collection of case studies. It explores the place of women in struggles for emancipation throughout the Middle East and North Africa from the 1950s to the 2020s. It highlights how both feminist movements and feminine “non-movements” transformed the Arab political landscape, and how they intersected in the dynamics of contestation. Through a bottom-up approach, it explores feminisms as well as social and political femininities as ever-shifting categories. It relies on a variety of disciplines and methods, from archival research to ethnography, interviews, and discourse analysis.
