The central theme of this volume is to re-examine the received concepts and images of ghosts in various religious cultures ranging from the Ancient Near East and Egypt to the Old Testament, the Classical Era, Early Medieval and Early Modern Europe, Early India, and Medieval China. As a religious phenomenon, the realm of ghosts has been less studied than the realm of the divine. Through a collaborative effort by scholars from different disciplines, this volume proposes a multi-cultural approach to construct a wider and complicated picture of the phenomenon of ghosts and spirits in human societies and to have a grasp of the various problems involved in understanding the phenomenon of ghost.

"The contributors hail from such varied and various disciplines as Theology, Philosophy, History, Egyptology, Philology and Anthropology, but I believe that parapsychologists might learn and benefit from this work as a fine example of a successful interdisciplinary endeavour."
Elliot Cohen, Leeds Metropolitan University, Journal of the Society for Psychical Research, Vol 75,2
"The effort which has been put into this volume is of high standard and should be commended. I would recommend this book to anyone who is interested in ghosts and apparitions, in order to learn more about how and why different people and different cultures interpret paranormal occurrences the way they do."
Callum Cooper, Northampton University, The Journal for Spiritual and Consciousness Studies, Vol. 37, No. 2
"As a whole, Rethinking Ghosts collects several valuable contributions to the study of specters and spirits in the world’s historical religions."
Molly Bassett, Georgia State University, Religion 42:3
