After the sudden death of their father, the Dashwood family is left destitute. The novel follows the fortunes of this family, focusing especially on the experiences of the two elder sisters, who embody diametrically opposed outlooks on life: while Elinor represents common sense and reason, Marianne is driven by emotion and feeling. The challenges these two young women must overcome in their romantic misadventures teach them that perhaps a virtuous balance between both attitudes is the only way forward.

Sense and Sensibility, the first novel Austen published, offers a vivid portrait of the condition of women at the end of the eighteenth century.
