Handcrafted toys don’t just entertain; they become treasured keepsakes, handed down through generations. While entertaining us today, these handcrafted toys become part of the family’s lore and history, making them even more meaningful in today’s fast-moving, throwaway culture.
With expert guidance from toy-maker Iain Russell, this handy manual shows just how easy it is to make charming, sustainable hand-crafted toys. There are 20 projects to choose from, each with clear, step-by-step instructions that are easy to follow, and provide templates where required. In addition, an in-depth chapter offers advice on tools, materials and techniques, discuss wood choices and finishes, plus safety points to keep in mind while making the toys.
These captivating toys are not only fun for you to make but will delight young children and promote imaginative play.
Iain Russell has always been fascinated by toys, and he hasn’t stopped since he first started making toys for his (now grown-up) children. Sustainability is at the heart of Iain’s work, and he seizes the opportunity to recycle and upcycle whenever he can. Iain became a member of the British Toymakers Guild in 2005 and is a member of both the Sussex Woodcraft Society and Weald Crafts. In addition to his toy-making business, Iain has produced commissions using Victorian patterns for Pollocks Toy Museum and made a special folk toy that featured in the recent film Blitz.
