This selected translation of the writings of Su Shi (Su Dongpo, 1037–1101) includes all the genres of prose and poetry that he worked in. A special feature of this book is the arrangement of writings based strictly on the chronology of Su’s life, and consequently the mixing of different writing genres together, rather than keeping the genres apart (as normally done in selections of his works). This arrangement more accurately reflects the way his writing was produced in real time. It also highlights the range of his "voices" in different literary forms, and how he delighted in treating a single set of circumstances repeatedly in different genres to fulfill different expressive purposes.
