The ancient Greek grammarians and erudites whose textual fragments are critically edited and commented on here for the first time appear to have dealt with different areas of scholarship, ranging from grammar to lexicography, literary criticism and biography, musicology. The authors and topics examined by these ancient investigations include Homer, Sappho, Alcaeus, the archaic dithyramb, Antimachus of Colophon, Theopompus of Chius, Menander, some peculiarities of the Laconian dialect, ancient musical theories and relevant discussions. In short, this volume offers a manifold gallery of intellectual profiles and critical problems, which are well represented in the rich range of themes posed by the remnants of ancient Greek scholarship.
