SGG 6 offers a commented critical edition of the preserved grammatical fragments of Zoilus of Amphipolis, a grammarian, rhetorician and historian, who lived in the 4th century BCE and is known as the Homeromastix (“the Scourge of Homer”). His most renowned work was Against Homer’s Poetry in nine books, in which he pointed out inconsistencies, contradictions and errors in Homeric poetry, in line with the Zetemata-type studies. The importance of his Homeric exegesis is demonstrated by contemporaries (among whom Aristotle) and later grammarians’ efforts in trying to find solutions to the problems he had raised.

"Fogagnolo’s meticulously researched and comprehensive book provides a strong foundation upon which scholars interested in Zoilus, as well as in the history of ancient criticism and rhetoric, can fruitfully build. Her commented edition will remain a standard reference for years to come and will also be of interest to Homerists as well as scholars interested in the ancient reception of archaic poetry." Matthieu Réal in: BMCR 2023.02.10
Marta Fogagnolo completed her Ph.D. (2020) at the University of Pisa. Her academic interests include Greek epic, ancient Homeric scholarship, Greek epigraphy and Digital epigraphy. She published with Brill Supplementum Gramaticum Graecum 2. Antimachus Colophonius.
