The setting is the very year that could have changed everything, but did not: protests, burning tires in the streets of the capital, power outages, boleros, rancheras, and pop ballads of the era; the dictator wrestling with his ghosts and with his wife Lucía, obsessed with the latest Nina Ricci fashions.

My Tender Matador takes its title from a line in an old song performed by Sara Montiel and is the only novel written by Pedro Lemebel. Considered one of his essential works, it tells the impossible love story between a lovable aging queer and a young revolutionary guerrilla.
