Textual Transmission across the Premodern Middle East, Central Asia, and the Indian Subcontinent explores how Arabic and Persian texts were preserved, transmitted, and transformed in manuscript cultures between 950 and 1900. Across sixteen case studies, this volume examines chronicles, genealogical and biographical works, religious writings, legal texts, epics, didactic fables, romances, and scientific texts from the Arab and Persianate worlds. It traces processes of copying, abridgement, reorganization, translation, adaptation, reinterpretation, and reuse, showing how texts were continually reshaped in response to new audiences, political and religious contexts, intellectual needs, and changing literary, linguistic, and scholarly environments.
