Founded on a lifetime’s research and creative thought, this is the crowning work of an internationally celebrated Hebrew Bible/Old Testament scholar. Part I provides an engaging running commentary on the text from a final-form, canonical perspective, and Part II deals with a range of thematic issues, including: creation, covenant and election, the patriarchs, the promised land, torah, cult, Moses, David, Zion, language about God, prophecy, wisdom, Israel’s historical consciousness, hermeneutics, Jewish and Christian theology of the Hebrew Bible. It is both an invaluable tool for students and a significant work demanding the attention of professionals.

“The Canonical Hebrew Bible enacts a most happy convergence of two trajectories. On the one hand, there is now great ferment in OT studies with special emphasis upon a canonical perspective. On the other hand, Rolf Rendtorff has now drawn together the produce of his long, studied reflection on the OT and our ways of interpreting it. Rendtorff has been a pioneer in canonical studies and puts his great learning to use here. He moves through and beyond the common critical agenda to take up the most demanding interpretive issues. His long-standing engagement with Jewish interpreters is a special gift of his work. Taken altogether, this is a major contribution, not only to be celebrated, but much to be studied and pondered.” – Walter Brueggemann
Rolf Rendtorff is Emeritus Professor of Old Testament, University of Heidelberg. For many years he was president of the “Church and Judaism” commission of the Evangelical Church in Germany (EKD) and he is an honorary member of the Council of the World Union of Jewish Studies. He is the author of many acclaimed books, including The Old Testament: An Introduction (SCM), The Covenant Formula (T&T Clark).
