The Chili Paste Incident follows a ten-year-old immigrant boy who arrives in 1970s Mississippi carrying little more than hope—and finds himself thrust into a world of racial tension, rejection, and isolation.
Desperate to belong, he spends his formative years trying to understand who he is and where he fits. Some attempts end in triumph; others in painful failure. Through the loneliness of his early years, music and books become his refuge, offering an escape when acceptance seems out of reach.
As he enters his teenage years, the search for belonging takes a more complicated turn. He discovers love, but with it comes both rejection and acceptance, heartbreak and hope. Each experience shapes the young man he is becoming.
Then comes the moment when he leaves—a departure as unexpected and memorable as the journey that brought him there.
Loosely inspired by the author’s own experiences, The Chili Paste Incident is a coming-of-age story about displacement, identity, resilience, and the universal desire to find a place in the world.
