"A spectre is haunting Europe—the spectre of Communism." The Communist Manifesto (1848) is one of the most important pieces of political writing in modern history, sparking outrage, revolution, and controversy since its initial publication in 1848.

In the text, Karl Marx and Friedrich Engels begin by laying out the different classes of people within society and how those classes interact with one another. They stress the exploitation of the working class by the capitalist class and the consequences of that exploitation. The Manifesto concludes with a call to direct action, urging the masses of workers to rise up in revolution and seize the means of production. In their view, this revolution is the only path forward to create a just society.

Karl Marx (1818–1883) was a German philosopher, economist, political theorist, and sociologist whose ideas profoundly shaped modern political and economic history. Alongside his lifelong collaborator Friedrich Engels, Marx analyzed the mechanics of capitalism, labor, and history, developing the theoretical framework later known as Marxism. Friedrich Engels (1820–1895) was a German philosopher, social scientist, and businessman. He provided essential financial backing and intellectual partnership to Marx, co-authoring several foundational texts and editing the later volumes of Marx's landmark economic study, Das Kapital. Together, their 1848 publication of The Communist Manifesto ignited revolutionary movements across the globe.
